The Authentic Side of Japanese Craftsmanship with Takaori
Interview with Luca Marcellini
Takaori is a relatively new brand in the European market.
What sets you apart from other handcrafted eyewear brands?
Takaori is not simply a new brand trying to carve out a space among thousands of existing names. Takaori is a project, a vision. It is a celebration of true craftsmanship, a return to meticulous, patient, entirely handmade work. We cater to those who seek something different, something authentic—those who want to stand out from the crowd with a product that has a soul, one that is the result of hours of dedication and skill.
What makes Takaori’s production unique compared to other brands that claim to be “Made in Japan”?
Many brands claim to be made in Japan, but often only a part of the process takes place there. Takaori’s collection, on the other hand, is entirely produced in Japan—from A to Z. Every single step—from the selection of materials to the crafting and finishing—is done by hand by our Japanese artisans. This allows us to guarantee not only impeccable quality but also an authenticity that is reflected in every detail of the frame.
Takaori is a niche product. Who is your target audience?
We are not targeting the mass market. Takaori is designed for true connoisseurs, for those who appreciate excellence and exclusivity. The best boutiques, collectors, and industry experts recognise the value of a truly handcrafted product. Our glasses are not for everyone, and that is part of our appeal. Every piece tells a story of craftsmanship and is made for those who seek something rare, far removed from the logic of mass marketing.
Let’s talk about production. We know that Takaori only produces a limited number of pieces each month. Why this choice?
Our artisans can produce a maximum of 200 pieces per month. This is not a strategic decision, but a necessity driven by the very nature of our production process. Each frame requires hours of manual work, precision, and passion. Quality comes before quantity for us. We prefer to make fewer pieces but create something extraordinary. This approach makes each pair of Takaori glasses almost unique, difficult to replicate.
In an era dominated by major endorsements and aggressive marketing, how does Takaori position itself?
Our project stems from a clear vision: to bring the true, authentic craftsmanship back to the forefront. We do not seek major endorsements or elaborate advertising campaigns, because we believe that our product should tell its story through what makes it unique: the hours of manual work required to create each piece and the use of the finest materials available. With Takaori, you are not paying for advertising costs but investing in the value of pure craftsmanship—in the dedication of skilled hands that attend to every detail with precision and passion. It is a return to the roots, to a time when excellence was the result of expertise, time, and attention. We let our products, the most prestigious boutiques, and those who recognise the value of true craftsmanship tell and spread the uniqueness of Takaori.
What are the prospects for Takaori’s future in the European market?
We are very confident. The response we are receiving has been extremely positive. 2025 will be a pivotal year, and we expect significant growth for the Takaori collection in Europe. Our goal is to continue collaborating with selected partners who understand and appreciate our work, gradually expanding the brand’s presence in new boutiques that share our values.
One last question: what would you like people to truly understand about Takaori?
We would like them to understand that Takaori is more than just an eyewear brand. It is the embodiment of a philosophy, a tribute to authentic craftsmanship and Japanese excellence. When you wear a pair of Takaori glasses, you carry with you a story, a piece of culture, and an experience that goes beyond a mere accessory.
