What happens when you combine a 1979 Corvette, two talented artists, live music, a downtown Toronto crowd and one of eyewear’s most recognizable brands? You get Carrera’s Paint My Ride.
On Saturday, August 1, Carrera Eyewear brought its 70th anniversary celebrations to Sankofa Square with a live art competition that felt more like a cultural event than a traditional eyewear launch.
At the centre of the action was a classic 1979 Chevrolet Corvette C3, transformed into a rolling canvas by Toronto-area artists Bruno Smoky and TheHalfDecent. As the afternoon unfolded, spectators watched the car evolve into a striking piece of street art while DJs, music and Carrera eyewear added to the atmosphere.
Optical Prism was pleased to attend, with Publisher Suzanne Lacorte and Associate Publisher Nick Samson joining Safilo executives including Roberto Genovese, SVP Brands, PR & Communications and Customer Marketing, and Martin Lebeau, Regional Manager, Eastern Canada.
The event was part of Carrera’s broader Paint My Ride Tour, created to celebrate the brand’s 70-year heritage and its long-standing connection to motorsport, individuality and bold design.
What made the Toronto activation especially interesting was how Carrera took eyewear beyond the optical store.
The Corvette created the spectacle. The artists brought the creativity. The music created the energy. Carrera connected all of it back to a lifestyle brand built around confidence and unmistakable style.
When the paint dried, TheHalfDecent emerged as the winner, but the bigger takeaway was how successfully Carrera connected with consumers in a completely different environment.
Seventy years after its founding, Carrera clearly isn’t interested in simply looking back.
Judging by the Corvette sitting in the middle of downtown Toronto, the brand still knows how to make an entrance.
