Smart glasses have been talked about as the future of eyewear for years. On July 29 in Richmond Hill, Ming’s Optical helped bring that future directly to Canada’s optical community with the Canadian launch of Rokid AI Glasses.

Hosted by Ming’s Optical at the impressive Venture X Richmond Hill/Markham, the event brought together eyewear, artificial intelligence and wearable technology in an atmosphere that was polished, welcoming and distinctly forward-looking.

At the centre of the launch was Mickey Ming, owner of Ming’s Optical, whose company has been appointed Rokid’s exclusive Canadian optical-industry distributor.

That role is significant.

Ming’s Optical is helping lead Rokid’s introduction to the Canadian optical market through retailer development, product demonstrations, education and customer support, creating an important bridge between advanced wearable technology and optical professionals.

Optical Prism was pleased to attend, represented by Publisher Suzanne Lacorte, Associate Publisher Nick Samson and Kathleen Irish, VP Sales.

Also attending was Ben Liu, Rokid’s Head of Global Communication and Brand, who shared Rokid’s vision for AI-powered eyewear and introduced guests to the technology.

Rokid smart glasses can incorporate AI assistance, real-time translation, visual information, navigation, photography, video and other hands-free digital tools designed to make information accessible within the wearer’s everyday environment.

But the most interesting question may not be about any individual feature.

It is about where smart eyewear belongs.

Will consumers primarily turn to technology retailers, or will opticians, optometrists and optical retailers play an important role in selecting, prescribing, fitting and supporting these increasingly sophisticated products?

The relationship between Rokid and Ming’s Optical offers a compelling Canadian example of those two worlds coming together.

If the July 29 launch was any indication, the next chapter of eyewear is already beginning.
